FTM Transmasculine Top Surgery

If you are a transgender man or non-binary individual who wants to attain a more masculine or less feminine look by reducing the size of your breasts, transmasculine top surgery may be your ideal solution. In addition to removing breast tissue and excess skin, the procedure also often involves the repositioning and resizing of the nipples.

For so many of our patients, masculization surgery achieves more than just a flatter chest and a more masculine appearance; it allows them to live more authentically, with improved self-esteem and a body image that is more aligned with their inner selves. During your initial consultation, Dr. Zinsser will discuss all of your options and explain what you can realistically expect from your top surgery results.

Richmond, VA Transgender Patient Experiences

"I'm a trans nonbinary person who just got top surgery with Dr. Zinsser 6 days ago. When I say that I could not imagine more perfect results its completely true, but that honestly goes to my entire experience with him and his staff. They are trans educated, led me to getting insurance coverage despite mental illness, genuinely kind, responsive, took me to a hospital that was FANTASTIC the day of my operation, more affordable than other surgeons in the area, and likely hit all of the boxes not specifically mentioned yet. I cannot thank them enough for giving my dream chest and treating me with such kindness through the entire process."

MTF Transgender Top Surgery FAQs

There are various options regarding breast implants, including saline vs. silicone, implant structure, overall cup size, implant placement, and incision location.

Dr. Zinsser is skilled in all breast augmentation techniques and will guide you through the details of each decision, taking into account your aesthetic goals and unique anatomy.

Recovery time for a tummy tuck is approximately 4-6 weeks. Though you will be discharged from the medical facility the day of your procedure, you will likely need assistance completing normal tasks for a few days, especially if you have young children.

As with any surgical treatment, it is important to follow Dr. Zinsser’s instructions regarding activities, cleansing, garment use, wound and drain care, and sun exposure to ensure optimal results from your tummy tuck procedure. We will provide you with a full list of aftercare instructions to follow that includes nutrition and hydration.

Existing breast tissue, breast shape, skin elasticity, and body type play a role in your overall transformation after MTF breast augmentation. Age is also a factor. Older patients will have chests that may appear more youthful than women your age.

There are a wide range of sizes for breast implants. It’s a good idea to bring a photo to your Top Surgery consultation of your desired results. When selecting images, choose individuals with a body shape similar to your own.

During your consultation, you’ll try on implant sizers to determine the best look under clothing. It’s a highly accurate method of predicting what size is best suited for you.

Dr. Zinsser recommends that MTF Top Surgery patients access feminizing hormone therapy for at least one year before MTF breast augmentation surgery to maximize breast growth and achieve optimal aesthetic results. However, hormone therapy is not a requirement for surgery.  Dr Zinsser will discuss your options with you.

Risks associated with Top Surgery are relatively minor. The risk of experiencing a serious difficulty is less than half of one percent. Although small, Dr. Zinsser advises to become aware of the potential complications to be aware of during your recovery.

So far, little evidence links saline or silicone implants to cancer. Only 2% of all breast cancer occurs in the breast tissue of male designated people at birth. Therefore, the risk for breast cancer is extremely low for transfeminine people with or without breast implants.

However, there is some scientific evidence that estrogen HRT can increase cancer risk. If you are over the fifty and have had HRT for five or more years, it’s recommended that you get an annual mammogram.
