What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) is a surgical procedure that increases the size of breasts and improves their overall shape. It is the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in the United States and has been for several years consecutively. More than 300,000 women undergo breast augmentation annually. Although it’s widely popular, that does not necessarily mean it is right for you. We encourage you to discuss your goals and your surgical options with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John Zinsser.

You may be a great candidate for breast enhancement if any of the following apply:

  • You are old enough to get the procedure (at least 18 for saline breast implants and at least 22 for silicone breast implants)
  • You want larger, fuller breasts than you have now
  • You want to reduce your breast asymmetry, which is the difference in size and shape of the breasts
  • You want rounder or more shapely breasts
  • You want to enhance your cleavage

Breast augmentation is achieved via breast implants. While all breast implants have an outer silicone shell, the fill material may be saline fluid or silicone gel. Saline is a sterile saltwater solution. While saline has a fluid consistency, silicone gel closely mimics the look and feel of real human fat. Dr. Zinsser has seen both options be successful, and he will help you choose the implant type that suits your body and your expectations of the results.

Dr. Zinsser will also help you choose breast implant size. Most women interested in enlargement have some idea of the cup size they would like to achieve. Discussing cup size is a good starting point, and you will be able to try on breast implants inside your shirt during the consultation so that you can point out the results you want. Implants are measured in CCs, not cup sizes, and Dr. Zinsser helps you to see how various sizes will look on your body frame.
